This afternoon Tottenham Hotspur welcome Southampton to Lane in a game that is expected to be action packed. Spurs enter the game in fine form being the only team in the Premier League to be unbeaten all season at home. They are also on a run of nine consecutive home wins in the League which is a club record. The visitors are also starting to gain a little bit of momentum after coming into the game on the back off a two match winning streak. It’s expected to be a close game with Mauricio Pochettino, Victor Wanyama and Toby Alderweireld ready to face their form side. However, Southampton have only beaten Spurs once in their last 9 games, with the visitors only being able to keep 1 clean sheet in their last 25 away league games against Tottenham.
Manager Pochettino is excited to face his former club and relishes the power the fans give the team at White Hart Lane.
“It’s very to good to play at White Hart Lane. It’s always fantastic when we play in front of our fans. But every game is a challenge for us to keep our run, to keep playing well. We know that Southampton is a very good team, but our objective is to try to play well, try to win, take three points and try to keep our position in the table.”
Unfortunately for Spurs they lost their main man Harry Kane to a ankle injury against Millwall which is a big loss for the London side. However, Pochettino is confident Tottenham can do as well without him.
“During the season we had different players out and the team is the team – we need to perform as well, we need to play in the way that we always play and try to win games. For us, always we feel the same and always when you play, the challenge is to win. It doesn’t change now. We have to find a solution until Harry Kane is available again. We have players who can cope with the pressure. The team is now more solid.”
Southampton manager Claude Puel also reflects the impact Harry Kane’s injury will have on the game.
“He’s an important player for them, but I think they have other solutions. He’s a strong and great player of course, but there are many solutions for Pochettino. In the last game you could see Son with three goals and with Alli and Janssen also, Eriksen too they have many quality offensive players and they can do without him.”
Puel, who saw his side beaten 4-1 against Spurs earlier in the year is expecting the game to be another challenge but one that is great to analyse their progress.
“They have a lot of wins at home, so it’s a good challenge for us. It’s difficult with one game every two weeks to keep concentration, but it’s important to have a good response at Tottenham. It will be interesting to see our progress since the beginning of the season.”
Former Southampton player Victor Wanyama is ready for the game today and reflects on the switch he made to join Tottenham.
“The team (Tottenham) is always looking forward and I love that. It’s always ‘how can we win the next game?’. Southampton are a great club and it was a big step. I needed to adjust and it too me six months. After that, I was able to click and perform. I’m improving game by game. I’m at the right club and going in the right direction. We all want to bring the glory back to the club and we can achieve that.”
The fans have also been having their say about today’s game and most seem confident about a Spurs win.
@RobertDunne17 – ‘Spurs will find it difficult to break down Southampton’s defence. Spurs are without Kane for 4/5 week but they will win 2-1.’
@Deanoxby21 – ‘Possibly give Janssen a chance to prove himself more after scoring off the bench last week. 3-0 win for Spurs.’
@cvh1958 – ‘3-1 Spurs.’
@Jackhop14 – ‘You don’t know what Southampton team will turn up. One week they do good, the next week they lose. Hopefully we’ll (Spurs) thrash them, 3-1 Spurs.’
@baileyjohn80 – ‘I think Son will step up to the challenge of rep lacing Kane. Tottenham 3 Southampton 1. (Son 2, Dele) (Redmond)’
@peter_pdm – ‘2-1 Spurs… Sonny and Dele.’
@coys100 – ‘Easy 3-0 win Spurs, Son 2 and Dele 1. Son will be a totally different player in a 3-4-3. He won’t get isolated and will have Dele and Eriksen around him.’
@rookieyoung1 – ‘We will have to keep an eye on their Italian striker (to win), he’s in form.’
@ttimbertony – ‘A great opportunity perhaps for Janssen now that he’s discovered his shooting boots’.
@eimiharbe – ‘Spurs to win 2-0.’
@francissavege – ‘A tricky game vs the last team to win at the Lane. How we deal with the loss of Harry is key. I think we can. Spurs to win 2-1.’
@AntHollick7 – ‘3-2 Spurs!’
@Johnny_KC – ‘Tight game, 1-0 free-kick goal by Eriksen in the 34th minute… At least I hope so!’
@alexhill_ – ‘I’m going with 2-0 Spurs win’.
@Leeh4239 – ‘2-1 Spurs, close game with us struggling to break them down.’
@peekz – ‘Spurs 2-1 after an early Eriksen goal and second half winner from Dele. Will be a close match’.
@AndrewBC90 – ‘Son, Dele and Eriksen attacking 3 for me. Janssen off the bench.’
PS – I’m going with a 4-1 Tottenham win with goals from Son, Dele, Eriksen and Janssen!
With Tottenham Hotspur still sitting in second place and still in strong form it is a game that they are expected to win. However, Southampton are a strong side and anything can happen. A win for Spurs will keep the pressure on Chelsea who sit in top spot. The game this afternoon is available live on Sky Sports News from 13:00 GMT with kick off at 14:15 GMT.
