As we know this evening Manchester City host Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium in a game that is all to play for in the Premier League. The visitors enter the game in fine form winning the last 6 games in the league picking up the maximum 18 points. It’s a different story for their hosts who come in to the game on the back of a heavy 4-0 defeat to Everton. Spurs also, have the upper hand on City after beating them 2-0 in the league back in October. Pep Guardiola believes Tottenham are the only team in the league to outplay his side as well as praising Mauricio Pochettino for his managerial tactics.
“Tottenham are a good team. At White Hart Lane Tottenham were much better. In the other games I don’t feel that feeling that the opponents were much better. They are really playing good. As a fan of football, I love to see them. They are brilliant.”
It’s Mauricio’s third season there, so they play how he wants – strong physically, good build-up, quality between the lines. They play at the right tempo, they are a good team and they are playing really good. All of them know where the players are. To create that you need time – and quality of course.”
However, Guardiola and Manchester City have completed the transfer of Gabriel Jesus for £27 million. He was signed in time to be up for selection to face Tottenham. Man City defender Nicolas Otamendi has reflected on the new signing.
“The arrival of a new players always helps and strengthens us. He’s a very quick and skilful player, very talented and we hope to have him at his best level soon. We all hope we can see his potential very soon.”
“I think it is essential to work as a team. Both defensively and offensively, it’s very important play a very compact match and try not to make any mistakes” stated Otamendi.
Spurs boss Pochettino has a different view on the game and believes the lilywhites have to keep their focus if they are to have the edge over their opposition.
“Tottenham is bigger than Manchester City, historically. With the fans it is bigger at Tottenham. In the Premier League, every game is 90 minutes where you need to be ready to fight and focus. It’s impossible to go to sleep for a moment because the quality that we have in the Premier League is very high.”
He also, believed that even though Spurs got the 3 point at White Hart Lane every game can be different.
“Every game is different, every game has different circumstances and a little percentage you can’t control and it’s for that reason you always have to be ready and to be focused to arrive in a position to give your best – and we arrive at City in a good moment. Those experiences must help us. We are in a similar position in the table and it will be exciting.”
Central defender Toby Alderweireld also, has the same outlook on the game as his manager Mauricio.
“I think the team has good momentum at the moment, of course we are confident in our own quality and it’s going to be a tough game. It’s going to be a good game on a high level and these are the big games and that’s why you want to play at the top in the league, because you want to play these kinds of games and get results. Yes, it’s going to be tough, a big game and we’re looking forward to it.”
With Tottenham Hotspur currently sitting in second place and in strong form it’s a game that is going to be actioned packed and all to play for against fifth place Manchester City this evening a 17:30 GMT kick off. A win will keep Tottenham in second place and will put the pressure back on Chelsea tomorrow.
