Southampton welcome Tottenham to St Mary’s tonight with Spurs hoping to continue their push for a Champions League spot this season. Three points for Tottenham would see them 1 point off their rivals Arsenal in 4th position. The game kicks off at 19:45 GMT and is live on Sky Sports 1 from 19:30 GMT. Spurs Boss Mauricio Pochettino will be returning to his former club hoping to pick up all 3 points.
Tottenham come into the game with two wins on the bounce following the narrow defeat to Manchester United. Southampton are also on form, picking up 7 points of the last 9 available extending their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 3 games. The Saints have also, picked up more points than their opposition in their last 5 league games with a total of 10 compared to Tottenham’s 9.
Spurs lead the head to head battle against The Saints winning 2 of the last 4 meetings and drawing 1. However, last time they met Southampton took all 3 points coming from 1-0 down to win 2-1 at White Hart Lane. Therefore, going into tonight’s game it is all to play for.
The team news coming into today’s game is good news for Spurs after Pochettino confirms their centre-half Toby Alderweireld is returning to the squad after recovering from a minor back problem leaving him out of their 2-1 win against Burnley.
“Toby will be available, he has been training well after his problem with his back.”
The Spurs Manager also said that Vincent Janssen will be available for selection after recovering from an ankle problem which has kept him out since the defeat to league leaders Chelsea.
“Vincent Janssen will be available too.”
However, their is still one important player for Spurs; Erik Lamela who unfortunately is not fit for today’s game as he is still struggling with a hip problem.
“We’ll see what happens. It’s a slow recovery, we are happy but we need to be patient with him.” Stated Mauricio.
As for the home side Southampton their number 14 Oriol Romeu is back from suspension after a 1 match ban. But, they will be without their midfielder Jordy Clasie after he picked up a groin injury. The Saints are still without their long term absentees Matt Targett and Charlie Austin who have hamstring and shoulder injury’s respectively.
Southampton manager Claude Puel believes his team will be fresh and concentration is key in winning against Tottenham today.
“For this game, all the team will be fresh. Just, of course, Austin with his injury and also Jordy Clasie, but all the players present have had a good recovery after the game against Bournemouth.”
“Now it’s important to come back with good concentration for the first game after ten days off, and I prefer to play against a good team for the concentration and the good spirit.”
With the top four all recording wins this week it is important that Tottenham match their efforts to continue their battle for a Champions League spot. Southampton will also, see this as a big game as a win would move them up to 6th place and only 6 points off a Europa League spot.
Predicted Result: Southampton 1 – 3 Tottenham.
